Bringing bio-chemistry to cleaning

When it comes to cleaning products used by contractors in the facilities management industry a low price generally comes first, but why do other considerations, like high cleaning performance or the environment, have to come second?

That belief underpins the research and development behind biosciences company Genesis Biosciences who are using biology and modern chemistry, not traditional chemicals to change the facilities management industry with their eco-benign technology.

The company develops microbial and antimicrobial cleaning products that contain natural active substances and specific Bacillus strains to create high-performing, yet environmentally positive solutions.

Dr Phil Caunt, research and development specialist at Genesis Biosciences, said that traditional chemical cleaners are "developed to offer some immediate cleaning benefits at a very low price, but the low price point means that once diluted the product is only minimally effective and requires either frequent cleaning or a lot of labour to get the desired results".

“On the other hand you have some quite hazardous products and when you consider the long-term damage those products cause when applied on surfaces, the danger they pose to employees, and the impact they can have on the wider environment, the products are actually very costly for companies.

“Eco-benign technology means we are looking to develop chemistry that works with biology, not against it, while achieving maximal cleaning efficacy. When we look at modern chemistry ingredients for the programme we consider environmental concerns such as biodegradability, toxicity, and the behaviour of the material in the environment."
