For the last 30 years the escape breathing apparatus market has been the same; a cumbersome compressed air bottle, uncomfortable hood/facemask, complex donning and frequent maintenance.
The latest HEAD10 escape breathing apparatus, engineered by Semmco Life Protection Systems, is a much needed innovation in this industry.
Unlike its competitors HEAD10 produces oxygen from potassium superoxide, commonly known as KO₂. This chemical has been used in various industries including mining for over 100 years.
By using this chemical to produce oxygen rather than compressed air, the user is provided with an all encompassing apparatus with no components obstructing their arms or legs and has a total weight of 1.5 kg. Potassium superoxide also requires no maintenance, giving the product a shelf life of 12 years.
Centrica Energy South Humber Bank Station in Stallingborough is one of Semmco LPS’s customers of the HEAD10 escape set. This particular Centrica site previously owned a competitor’s compressed air escape set which they found costly in terms of maintenance and a cumbersome style of apparatus. When Centrica had examined the HEAD10 they identified the cost savings and succinct design style which convinced them to replace their current apparatus for the HEAD10.
Shaun O’Connor, operations technician at Centrica Energy South Humber Bank Station stated: "Once we had compared the HEAD10 to our previous escape breathing apparatus the cost saving and less cumbersome design made it a very appealing respiratory device. We do not intend to ever use this apparatus but if we did I have full confidence in the simplicity in the use of this device offering a safe and efficient escape”
