The new decking was commissioned by South Tyneside Council as part of the Government's Sea Change programme aimed at regenerating England's seaside resorts.

Before the new decking was installed, the only designated walking areas on the beach were tarmac surfaces which had deteriorated over the years, leading to concerns over slips and trips. There was also a risk of aquaplaning of flat-soled shoes because of frequent wetting from wind-driven sea spray and rain from the North Sea.

JB Antislip Plus decking was able to address all these issues because, even when wet, it provides a safe, slip resistant surface.
