Preventative action to protect your property

When we think of problem birds the most common suspects are gulls and pigeons, but other species such as Canada geese, starlings and corvids (crows, rooks, ravens, jackdaws) also come into conflict with businesses and organisations.

All of these can cause health and safety issues, such as:

  • Bird fouling – deposits on buildings, cars, stock, rooftop plant machinery or walkways can be a significant hazard and health and safety risk
  • Aggressive behaviour – very common during the nesting season (Mar – Sept)
  • Nesting in or on buildings – clogging drains or flues, encouraging insect infestation
  • Noise – Some species are very loud; gull calls in particular can be highly disruptive
  • Ground nesting – ground nesting species can cause significant development delays and costs.

It is important to take preventative action to protect your property, staff and customers, not only during nesting season but throughout the year. It is possible to discourage birds from returning to habitual nesting spots by humanely modifying their behaviour. This can be done using various methods often in combination, such as the use of birds of prey to scare the problem birds away from the area and the installation of bird proofing such as spikes, netting, gels and lasers to prevent nesting.
