Prevention, protection, equipment and training

With more than 450 exhibiting companies and organisations The Emergency Services Show, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham on 21-22 September, is set to attract thousands of visitors from across the emergency services and health and safety sector.

Free to attend for all health and safety professionals, The Emergency Services Show enables visitors to see and handle the latest equipment designed to deal with fire, floods, hazardous chemical incidents and medical emergencies as well as to speak to leading training providers.

The event has a host of new features for 2016 as it moves to the new, larger Hall 5 at the NEC. New seminar programmes will cover Lessons Learnt, ICT Innovation and PPE. Home Safety 2016 runs as a new show within the show, the Drone Zone brings together everything UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles), while features like the Collaboration Zone and College of Paramedics CPD workshops have also been enlarged.

As well as showcasing drone suppliers, the new Drone Zone will bring together industry specialists and end-users who will be making presentations on UAV technology and sharing their experiences with delegates. The programme includes a presentation on risk management for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) and the factors affecting RPAS operational safety in both civil airspace and commercial space. Other sessions will cover privacy, security implications and legislation.

Home Safety 2016 is a new show running alongside The Emergency Services Show 2016, where emergency services will share collaborative approaches to helping people live safely at home and equipment suppliers will showcase the latest specialist equipment for the safe home.

Several exhibitors are planning live demonstrations of equipment and rescue techniques. Harken Industrial’s Technical Team for example will be demonstrating the operational features of the PowerSeat man riding winch, by hoisting a person to the ceiling of the exhibition hall and back down again. This system for working at height is designed for use by rope access operators as a powered ascender and manual friction brake descender. Used where the operator is working in a fall-arrest harness, this seating arrangement eliminates wasted energy whilst maintaining an upright position, enabling the operator to work at height for longer periods. It can be used to rescue two people at a time and weighs just 14kg.

Water rescue demonstrations are planned for the Pendigo Lake, adjacent to the outdoor exhibition area outside Hall 5.

The College of Paramedics’ free 30 minute CPD workshops will be delivered from the expanded College of Paramedics’ CPD area. No pre-booking is required and all those attending the workshops will be given a CPD certificate. The new CPD-accredited Trauma Care Training & Education Zone will feature CPD skills stations and a fully immersive training suite where teams can perform a primary survey under pressure.

PPE seminars will be co-sponsored by WL Gore & Associates, whose European Product Specialist, Christophe Didelol, will present a session on the impact of moisture on thermal protection in structural fire fighter clothing.

Manufacturer of decontamination equipment and PPE VersarPPS, will be showing its ONESuit ET featuring the latest material technology for protection of emergency teams responding to high risk hazchem incidents. Features of the ONESuit ET include excellent resistance to an extensive range of vapours, liquids, aerosols and particulates; a laminated FEP visor; an integral sock and boot flap, or clamped boot with boot flap. It also features high performance laminated CoreTech Pro barrier membrane material encapsulated between PVC layers to increase durability.

Exhibitors offering a wide range of PPE and workwear include Armadillo Merino, Bristol Uniforms, Carrington Workwear, Concordia Textiles, Falmepro, Keela, Sioen, Stedfast and Turtleskin.

When a cardiac arrest occurs a speedy response is crucial as for every minute without CPR and defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 10%. There are around 30,000 cardiac arrests every year in the UK and 70% of these are in the community. Defib Store will be showcasing its range of outdoor defibrillator cabinets designed to ensure that defibrillators can be made accessible 24/7, 365 days a year.

Among the many exhibitors with lighting solutions at the show are CFM Services, LED Lenser, NightSearcher, Peli Products and Unilite International.

The NEC is linked to Birmingham International Station and Birmingham Airport and is directly accessible from the UK motorway network. Parking and entry to the exhibition and seminars at The Emergency Services Show are free.
